HOME LOANS – What options are available if I am unable to repay my home loan?

There are a few options that might be available to you right now.

  1. For eligible customers, this includes accessing their redraw facility, a repayment holiday, reducing your repayments to the minimum monthly repayment amount, or applying to change your repayments to interest only.
  2. If these are not available to you, or your ability to repay your home loan is more significantly impacted, you can request financial assistance by having your home loan repayments put on hold for up to six months.

However, during this time, interest and charges will add to the loan balance. At the end of the support period, your loan balance will be recalculated (to include interest and charges added to the balance during the support period) and your loan repayments will start again. Depending on your lender, your loan term may be extended so that your repayments stay the same as they were prior to the commencement of the deferral, or you can keep your original loan term and your repayments will be adjusted to ensure you pay your loan off over the original loan term.


Australian banks will defer loan repayments for six months for small businesses who need assistance because of COVID-19.

They are also offering loans, including overdrafts, with no repayments for the first six months, at very low interest rates, supported by the Government, through an SME Loan guarantee.

Other assistance can include fees waived, loans restructured, and further credit offered to get through the pandemic.
